week 5 - delicious tags

SOCIAL BOOKMARKING....I would love to say I have seen it all, but I know there is so much more and I can't help but say, "OK - Who on earth will CARE about what I tag as my favorites??" I certainly do not care what the world tags.....oops...showing my age, and my headache again. I think one of my limitations is the amount of information I choose to read on a computer screen? Print it out and read in the comfort of my home...yes...sit at my desk and read on a screen? not so much.

This is bothering me so much that I don't see how ANY of this is useful in my work world....someone will really have to enlighten me!! Maybe I will read someone elses blog to see what I am missing.....

Maybe no one will care what you tag unless they are e-stalking you. However, sometimes you can find other people who have tagged things that might be of interest to you and open new worlds of excitement. For example, say you like to look online for websites and blogs about scrap booking. And you tag them. Then someone else happens upon your delicious page who is also interested in scrap booking but never knew there were so many neat resources out there on the web. You've made that person's day!

That's a great point, Andi! Also, I think it would be a handy tool for the 12 (or so?!) people who have to work the library's reference desk one day a month.

The staffs of manuscripts and tech services (and stacy!) who only work at the reference desk once a month may not realize that the Virginia Gazette and the Richmond Dispatch are digitized and keyword searchable; yet if they accessed John's and my delicious account, looking under newspapers they might find that out and save the patron from searching microfilm.

They might also see that we have folders for Af-Am genealogy, Civil War, and so forth.

As for your bookmarks, suppose I get a question on Civil War flags or flag conservation in general and you were out of the office. I might be able to access some information to answer the question by browsing the bookmarks you have saved and included in your delicious account. Just my two cents. . .
